Community School for Creative Education (CSCE) School Principal
Job Description
Reports to: CSCE Board of Directors
Background, Duties, and Responsibilities
The Community School for Creative Education (www.communityschoolforcreativeeducation.org) is a public charter school authorized by the Alameda County Board of Education and located in Oakland. It opened in August 2011 with grades K-3 and is committed to bringing Waldorf educational principles to a public school urban setting. The school will eventually serve K-8.
The School Principal must have a sound educational philosophy, background, and vision grounded in Waldorf education and must be committed to service to a diverse community including children from poverty and English Learners. Further, the Principal must have a demonstrated management capacity to leverage leadership to operate CSCE effectively as well as an expressed willingness and plan to be accessible to staff, community and students.
Human Resources
• Responsible for review and selection from hiring committee’s recommendation of all of the following, developing employment contracts where appropriate, and supervising, supporting, developing, evaluating, disciplining and terminating the same:
o CSCE teaching faculty
o CSCE before-school, and aftercare and afterschool staff
o CSCE instructional leadership team (composed of Curriculum-Instruction Coach(es), elected faculty member and principal)
o Support personnel, including the school’s Business Operations Manager
Educational Leadership
• Oversees development, implementation and evaluation of educational program
• Consults with Director on program alignment to school mission and vision
• Coordinates and facilitates the work with CSCE Parent Action Committee (CPAC) around curriculum (coordination around access and fundraising led by Director)
• Develops and implements, in coordination with instructional leadership team and CPAC, communication system for all constituencies
• Ensures that the CSCE curriculum is aligned to charter petition, state standards, and mission, and is infused with Waldorf instructional practices
• With staff leadership, develops, implements and monitors the professional development plan for the CSCE whole staff Professional Learning Community
• Monitors school-wide assessment and data collection.
• Oversees student conferences and reporting
• Special Education: Attends SST/IEP meetings
• Attends crucial teacher-parent meetings
• Plans parent education events and speakers
• Oversees implementation of CSCE student discipline policy
• Creates Master Schedule aligned with the CSCE vision and mission as expressed in the charter
• Oversees and leads in coordination with the instructional leadership team the implementation of CSCE’s classroom disciplinary policy
• Leads Instructional Leadership Team to create a strong educational program
• Facilitates climate and conditions through a strong professional learning community
Faculty Supervision
• Ensures that each teacher develops a yearly professional development plan
• Manages Curriculum/Instructional Coach(es) to ensure effective support is provided
• Completes twice yearly classroom teacher evaluations in collaboration with director
• Ensures that all staff comply with all Special Education Regulations, the CSCE Charter and policies adopted by the CSCE Governing Board
• Ensures that teachers are implementing strategies and formats adopted by the school including, but not limited to, drawing from Open Court through Waldorf inspired strategies
• Ensures that teachers are administering reading and math assessments to inform their lesson planning and reports to parents
Governance and Internal Relations
• Attends all CSCE Board meetings and drafts agendas with Board chair and vice-chair
• Responsible for implementation of board policies and adopted administrative procedures
• Lead facilitator of the instructional leadership team
• Serves as Liaison to CSCE Parent Action Committee (CPAC), Parent Teacher Representatives and Family Resource Center
• Develops agenda of School Site Council in consultation with its members
• Leads in drafting the educational plan for CSCE Charter Renewal and Memorandum of Understanding
• Monitors daily Average Daily Attendance and plans accordingly
• Prepares budget for submission to Board; administers and monitors School’s financial affairs within the Board-approved budget.
• Ensures that the School office is efficiently and appropriately managed
Qualifications
The School Principal for the CSCE will possess a proven track record of success in the following areas

Specifically:
• Appreciation and understanding of Waldorf methods and philosophy and a commitment to bringing that to an urban public charter school setting
• Understanding of CA Content Standards/Common Core and how to align curriculum to standards
• Strong commitment to using data to inform instruction
• Commitment to continuous improvement in instructional practices
• Commitment to educational equity and a passion for teaching and working with students from an urban community, with knowledge and experience meeting the needs of students with different experiences, languages, and backgrounds
• Minimum of three years classroom teaching experience, preferably at least one of which was in an urban community
• Previous experience in senior leadership role for at least two years
• Experience managing a growing start-up organization, specifically related to building an innovative culture and creating and implementing accountability systems
• Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills
• Excellent communication, presentation, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
• Experience building a strong partnership with a nonprofit board of directors is preferred
• Experience working effectively with parents
• Computer literacy and interest in learning new skills as necessary
• Bachelor Degree—Masters degree or equivalent experience preferred
• Fluency/working knowledge of Spanish or Chinese preferred
Physical Demands
• Frequent: Sitting, walking, standing, conversing, and listening, reading, writing, close visual work.
• Occasional: Lifting and Carrying
• Infrequent: Pushing and Pulling
• Maximum Weights: Lift 25 lbs/Carry 25 lbs.
