Director of Education

Mountain Phoenix Community School seeks a full-time Director of Education starting this summer for the 2017-2018 school year. This position works in collaboration with the Director of Operations to lead one of the largest public Waldorf Schools in the country.

Our charter school offers a comprehensive academic curriculum, aligned with the Alliance for Public Waldorf Education standards. Our thriving school with double tracks through the grades serves a diverse community of over 600 children, preschool through eighth grade. Located close to Denver, Colorado, our beautiful campus has a bubbling stream and views of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Our children enjoy year-round outdoor activities with over 300 days of sunshine each year.

Denver also appreciates a dynamic Anthroposophical community with an Anthroposophical medical practice, an active branch of the Anthroposophical Society, study groups, Sound Circle Eurythmy, and three Waldorf high schools nearby. You will find everything a cosmopolitan city has to offer, including the nation’s second largest performing arts center, as well as easy access to the beautiful Rocky Mountains.

Successful candidates for the Director of Education will:

-Ensure a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment through overseeing Kim John Payne’s Three Streams Approach to student support.
-Set high expectation and guide teachers to implement creative, collaborative approaches to ensure students have excellent opportunities and outcomes.
-Delegate appropriately while maintaining accountability.
-Apply a child centered philosophy in all decision making.
-Lead a large organization in a co-director model dedicated to continuous improvement.
-Think flexibly and work collaboratively to link strategic plans with fiscal realities to close achievement and performance gaps school wide.


Ideal qualifications include:
-Previous experience in teaching or administering a charter school and knowledge of the legal and operational requirement for charter schools.
-Advanced degree from an accredited institution in educational administration.
-Minimum of three (3) years of successful school administration experience.
-Minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience.
-Certification and/or formal training in Waldorf education.


The Director of Education oversees and coordinates all pedagogical activities in the school. At a high level this includes developing and refining curriculum; supporting and inspiring faculty and other educational staff in interpreting Waldorf pedagogy to meet both the needs of our students as well as district and state standards; representing Mountain Phoenix to the parent community and to district representatives; and collaborating with the Mountain Phoenix Director of Operations and Governing Council to develop and implement a strategic plan aimed at fulfilling the mission and vision of the school.

The Director of Education is a member of the following committees, or determines a designee:
- Faculty Steering Committee
- Three Streams Student Support Group
- Curriculum Committee
- Personnel Council
- School Accountability Committee
- Policy Task Force
- Fundraising Committee
- MORE Committee (Marketing & Outreach)
- Ex Officio member of the MPCS Foundation

This position is hired by and reports to the Governing Council (a.k.a. Board of Directors) and is expected to attend all meetings but is not a member of the board. To read about the school’s governance structure, please visit our school website for a full list of policies.
