Lower School Gardening Teacher

Aug 23 2017 | Sacramento Waldorf School | Fair Oaks, CA

Sacramento Waldorf School is seeking a teacher to lead our outdoor education and gardening program with our eighth grade students for the 2017-18 school year. The program works primarily on the maintenance and beautification of our school’s five-acre mixed-use farm and garden using biodynamic principles. The curriculum achieves this through the planting and care of annual flower beds, and the repair and maintenance of fences, benches, and farm outbuildings. Additionally, the teacher will lead activities that maintain a California native plant garden along the bank of the American River, which the campus abuts. We are looking for a teacher with both a passion for and practical knowledge in basic gardening, light carpentry, and California native plants. Also crucial to this role is an understanding of how the merits of physical work and its relationship to hands-on learning meet the developing adolescent.

This position encompasses two classes a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 10:50am to 11:40am and includes two hours of paid preparation, for a total of 4 hours per week. Flexible farm work hours may also be included in addition to the 4 hours of teaching and preparation per week.
