Lower School Assistant

Position Summary

The Lower School (Grades 1 -5) Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting in creating a wonderful Waldorf classroom experience for students in our classrooms. The Lower School Assistant will work with the Class Teacher by assisting in classroom management and supervision of the class, engage appropriately with students, take direction from the Lead Teacher, and engage in day to day responsibilities according to the principles of Waldorf Education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Attendance
• Set up for painting
• Help with morning circle, provide assistance with disruptive children
• Help children with flute/recorder who require additional assistance
• Work with children who need additional assistance during bookwork and math classes
• Iron silks for nature table, wash individual chalkboards, cut paper and collate papers
• A variety of incidental tasks to support the needs of the teacher and class
• Correct math sheets/compositions/ grammar/ ML books in any grade, as needed
• Snack/lunch – set up hand washing, monitor cubby room, cut apples etc.
• Accompany particular children or whole class to subject classes
• May assist teachers in games/world language/instrument/eurythmy/
practical arts/handwork (to be determined by need and skill level of assistant in each grade)
• Sit near children with challenges to provide more aid
• If necessary, take challenged children out of the classroom for further assistance

Additional Responsibilities
• Cover no more than 4 transitions between classes in each grade
• Cover recess duties as an extra adult not as Class Teacher-paid at Hourly Rate
• Confidentiality in all student situations. Parent communication must come from the classroom teacher
• Student behavior and parent concerns must be brought to the Class Teacher
• Meetings which will be paid at the hourly rate (below):

  • Sectional Meetings (Lower School) * In-Service Week
  • CPR Training
  • February Conferences (Optional-only when conferences are at SMWS)

• Full Faculty Meetings are optional and are not paid at the hourly rate
• Time sheet needs to be approved by the main teacher and submitted by deadlines as determined by Human Resources/Payroll
• If an Assistant covers class(es) for the teacher, he/she is paid substitution rate: $25/hour, $75/Main Lesson (8-11a.m.), Full Day (7hrs) $150
• In accordance with the SMWS philosophy, the person filling this position may occasionally be required to carry out or assist with other tasks in accordance with the duties listed above

Education and Qualifications / Regulations
• Strong organizational skills
• Exposure to or some understanding of Waldorf Events and Festivals

Work Setting
• Classroom environments – Grades 1 through 5
• Because of the classroom setting, there are no breaks offered during the day

Salary, Hours, and Benefits
• Hourly rate of $16 per hour
• Typical hours are 8:30 – 1:30 depending on class teacher, Monday through Friday
• Arrive 5 minutes early, if needed, to prepare for start of class
• No employment benefits are offered for this position
• Holidays and days when school is not in session are unpaid

• Frequent walks; use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; talks and hears.
• Often required to stand and sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, squat or crawl.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
• Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the adjust to adjust focus.
