High School Science Teacher 2018-19

The Chicago Waldorf School is pleased to announce that it is seeking a High School Science teacher for its growing, urban campus. Located in the diverse and vibrant Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, the Chicago Waldorf School is fully accredited by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America and the Independent School Association of the Central States. The Chicago Waldorf School opened in 1974 and is an established Waldorf school in the Midwest. The school serves infants and toddlers in our Parent Child Program, and preschoolers in our Early Childhood Program. It provides a comprehensive 12 year Waldorf curriculum for students in Grades 1 – 12, with a total enrollment of 365 students.

Purpose and Scope of Job:
The high school science teacher is expected to be a specialist in his/her subject area, specifically life and earth sciences or chemistry. For high school science teaching, the ability to work with adolescent students in a laboratory/experiential setting is essential. Waldorf teacher training is highly desired, as is familiarity with technology, especially as it relates to this subject-area. Interest in leading student field-trips, including a one-week marine biology trip to the coast of Maine, is highly desired.
In addition to teaching, each high school teacher is expected to carry non-teaching responsibilities that are designed to support the healthy day-to-day functioning of the high school. Participation in a two-week service learning trip is also required.
The high school science teacher is responsible for implementing the curriculum of the Science program with guidance and support from the High School Leadership Group, the Teacher Development Committee and the College of Teachers. A high school teacher is also responsible for deepening their understanding of Anthroposophy, child development and seeking out new materials for their teaching.
The ideal candidate has,

• At least Bachelor’s level degree in life or earth science or chemistry
• Three years successful high school science teaching experience
• Familiarity with a phenomenological approach to science teaching
• A Waldorf high school science teacher training or a commitment to complete science teaching training
