The Detroit Waldorf School is currently seeking an instrumental Music Teacher for Band to begin immediately. The position includes 6 periods of instruction, Thursday and Friday afternoons: Introductory band instruction to fifth graders (2 periods); intermediate instruction to sixth graders (2 periods) and seventh/eighth grades (2 periods). Interested applicants should be willing to be part of a team of teachers committed to creating a strong curriculum of age-appropriate learning.

This is a part-time position offering a competitive hourly rate. The required qualifications of a Music Teacher for Band include substantial experience teaching band to a varied population, and a B.A., as well as ideally, a State of Michigan Teaching Certificate in General Music or Instrumental Music in order to participate in the Shared Time program in coordination with the South Redford School District.

We value excellent teaching and classroom management skills, as well as an understanding of child development. We also seek a colleague committed to building strong collegial and parent relationships, and one who is committed to self-development.

This position requires adaptability and flexibility with scheduling and the ability to adjust instructional delivery to varying grade levels and student abilities. Familiarity with the Waldorf approach to the music curriculum and how it addresses the developing child is preferred; willingness to learn about this approach through professional development provided by the school is a necessary minimum requirement.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lesson preparation in accordance with the philosophy, purpose, and curriculum standards of the Detroit Waldorf School
• Attendance at school events (day and evening) when band students are performing and also for opening and closing assemblies for the school year
• Preparation for and active participation in parent/teacher conferences
• Timely completion of student reports
• Completion of attendance reports in accordance with Shared Time agreement (if applicable)
• Completion of 30 hours of professional development per year that may include faculty meetings and curriculum development. (This is a Shared Time requirement, if applicable)
