We have a servant-leader Administrator, a longtime Waldorf-school Pedagogical Dean, experienced and new Kinder and Grades 1—6 Teachers, some assistants, savvy subject specialists, onsite Special Needs teachers, a well-organized Aftercare program, lazured classrooms full of interesting children, an affirming Board, and supportive parents who bring flowers and snacks. As a Waldorf-inspired charter school, we have 180 days of school a year; beautiful diversity; two recesses a day; regular salaries and holidays; school from 8:15 to 2:30; and established (but not too rigid) habits, practices, and festivals. Swallowtail School is a small developing Waldorf school located in Hillsboro, OR, a half an hour drive from downtown Portland. The school was founded in 1995 and is recognized as a developing Waldorf school through AWSNA. We serve over seventy students from Preschool through Grade Eight. Swallowtail school is self-administered, with a dedicated Faculty, Administration, and Board of Trustees. The school is a member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America. It joins a global community of over 900 Waldorf schools who have made a commitment toward progressive education and social renewal. Our curriculum includes Spanish, music, art, handwork, gardening, and cooking, along with blocks of German, Eurythmy, and Circus Arts.

In 2004, the school purchased land on the edge of Hillsboro for its permanent home. While close by to its current location, the 26 acre parcel meets the rural vision swallowtail has held since it’s beginning: it includes an old farmhouse and barn, a sweeping expanse of productive farmland, a 26 foot yurt, and a meandering creek. The school community is actively working together to design and create our facilities. The campus master plan includes spacious classrooms, administrative offices, a biodynamic garden, multiple play areas, and natural areas.
