The Charlottesville Waldorf School is celebrating over 40 years of providing Waldorf education to the Charlottesville area. Our school serves children from 2 years old up to 8th grade, and also offers Parent-Child classes for children 18 months to 6 years old. Having recently shifted to a mixed aged learning model in our elementary and middle schools, we are invigorating our curriculum to fully integrate the pedagogy’s innate wisdom with the unique needs of the 21st century.
Overview: Grades Class Teachers are a fundamental element of the Charlottesville Waldorf School’s (CWS) mixed-aged learning model and are distinctive from the traditional practice of a class teacher receiving a class in 1st grade as the beginning of an 8-year journey with the class. At CWS, grades class teachers teach combined classes in the lower grades loop (2nd, 2/3, 3/4, and 4/5) and for the next 2 years, our Middle School classes will be stand alone 6, 7, and 8 as we review our mixed age program. The class teacher requires creativity, flexibility, and the ability to innovate and reimagine the traditional Waldorf curriculum to meet students in combined classes. Strong classroom management skills are important for this position as are strong communication skills with parents.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Plan and carry out all areas of curriculum according to Waldorf pedagogy.
- Keep classroom supplies in good working condition. Order supplies as needed.
- Create and maintain a clean and orderly classroom space, including seasonal changes
- Keep a daily record of attendance.
- Review and keep a notebook of children's emergency and dismissal forms, as well as the list of children who have health concerns (allergies, medical conditions etc.)
- Communicate all student and parent concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Attend faculty meetings and workdays according to the school calendar.
- Work with the enrollment coordinator to facilitate new enrollments into our program
- Write midterm and end-of-year reports according to CWS guidelines
- Weekly full faculty and Grade School department meetings after school
- Mentor meetings
- Red Cross/CPR First Aid certification/Medicine Administration training (classes are usually offered during Faculty Work Days)
- Maintain a working knowledge of school policies and procedures:
- fire, shelter in place, and evacuation procedures
- proper documentation of children's injuries
- location and use of first aid kit
- Playground rules
Periodic evaluations and observations:
- Annual observations and periodic evaluations are part of professional development.

- These are described in the CWS Faculty Handbook. They should be reviewed by applicants before employment is accepted.
- Bachelor's degree, in education preferred

- Willingness to work out of Anthroposophy
- Acknowledging the inherent eurocentric bias and the social justice intentions of the Waldorf curriculum, have the ability to work toward consciously decolonizing the curriculum
- Willingness to pursue further Waldorf training
