Director of Advancement
River Valley Waldorf School is seeking a Director of Advancement for the 2021-2022 school year. The Director of Advancement is responsible for providing innovative and strategic leadership for institutional advancement. The Director of Advancement is responsible for managing and planning efforts in marketing and communications, development, and oversight of the admissions process. The Director of Advancement articulates all campaign strategies, participates in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects; oversees all advancement activities, and acts as liaison for the school and the community.
Serving as the Head of School’s chief advisor in matters relating to institutional advancement,

the Director sits on relevant Trustee committees, and takes responsibility for managing the

school’s strategic initiatives as they relate to funding priorities. The Director of Advancement will be responsible for building an Advancement team consisting of current employees and volunteers.

General Description

The essential duties of Director of Advancement are divided into three general categories:


Building a comprehensive fundraising program
Overseeing development office personnel activities, including the hiring, definition of job responsibilities, and performance review process of each staff member
Partnering with administrative staff, faculty, board members, and volunteers to achieve fundraising goals
Stewarding major donors and managing a portfolio of gift prospects, providing strategies for funding prospects for the Head of School, and ensuring that timely steps are taken toward solicitation
Continuing to grow the school’s Annual Appeal efforts to increase parent participation through improved communication and education
Working with the Board of Trustees’ development committee to establish event and campaign based fundraising strategies, practices, and plans
Strategizing community sources of funding through grants and corporations, both locally and nationally
Coordinating with the Parent Council concerning events, fundraising, and parent relations
Discover grant opportunities and build and maintain relationships with funders, donors, and others within the community that support the mission and vision of the school
Prepare grant proposals by determining concepts, gathering and formatting information, writing drafts, and obtaining approvals
Meet proposal deadlines and enter and monitor grant tracking data
Write, revise, and edit grant drafts including executive summaries, conclusions, and organization credentials
Prepare grant and development presentations for the Head of School and Board of Trustees.
Marketing and Communications

Collaborating with marketing and communications team members to address the school’s various communications needs, such as:
Defining the vehicles for communicating with all constituent groups
Overseeing alumni and parent communications and providing vehicles for more effective Board, staff, and faculty communication
Developing a plan for alumni and parent relations which is systematic in its approach, addressing those who are positively disposed and looking for mechanisms to stay involved with the school

Work to support and advance the commitment to equity, belonging, and anti-racism work within the school and, ensure that every element of school life reflects the principles of equity, justice, and the dignity of each individual
Collaborating with the Admissions Coordinator in developing a plan to increase
applicants through recruitment, advertising, and visibility

Collaborating with Admissions Coordinator to achieve admissions goals, identify ways to improve the admissions process, and ensure the user experience is positive and customer service driven
Collaborating with the Admissions Coordinator to plan admissions events and outreach
Represent the school at community events promoting admissions
The ideal candidate will possess:

A deep respect for, and ability to articulate, the mission and core values of River Valley Waldorf School and commitment to academic excellence in an independent school education, along with the Board of Trustees’ and Head of School’s goals on the strategic direction of the institution
A commitment to equity, belonging, and anti-racism work
Experience in development and experience in independent school advancement models, formulating and executing successful ongoing fundraising plans, along with experience with larger capital campaigns
Proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts
Grant writing and management experience
Strong management and leadership skills, both strategic and operational, and a demonstrated ability to build, manage, mentor, and motivate an effective team
Collaborative skills to work effectively with the Head of School, Trustees, faculty, staff and volunteers along with the ability to maintain confidentiality and to exhibit good judgment in making decisions
Ability to direct strategy and nimbly course-correct as necessary
Impeccable discernment between professional life and personal life, and between organizational goals and personal preferences
Excellent communication skills, interpersonal and relationship-building skills to effectively work with a variety of people and personalities
Proficiency in Microsoft programs and Google platform
Ability to present, inform and motivate individuals and groups about RVWS’ mission
Goal-oriented, persistent, and persuasive
Thorough, organized, and detail-oriented
Hours and Compensation

Full time salary or 80% salary based on applicant scheduling preference

Full remission for children
This is a full-time position Monday through Friday generally 8:00am-4:30pm. In addition, the Advancement Director would be required to attend Board of Trustees and various committee meetings as needed and at times be available during school breaks, summer break, and weekends to meet institutional needs.

Compensation for the full time salaried Director of Advancement position starts at $58,000.

Background clearances, physical examination, and TB test will be required.

The 7-acres of River Valley Waldorf School sits on forested hills that overlook the Delaware River on unceded Lenni-Lenape land. We are so grateful for the First Nations people’s reverent caretaking of the land we now call Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania. Upper Black Eddy is located in Bucks County and only 40-60 minutes from major metropolitan areas.
