Position: Woodworking Teacher


River Valley Waldorf School is seeking an experienced and dynamic 5th-8th grade woodworking teacher to join our dedicated faculty beginning immediately. The position requires authentic warmth, good humor, joy, and enthusiasm for working with children. The ideal candidate must also be willing to commit to the ongoing work of diversity, equity, and inclusion and have familiarity or interest in best practices of Waldorf education.


General Description

The woodworking teacher should be able to work collaboratively with school faculty to schedule and plan developmentally appropriate projects, with an understanding that students within a given class will make progress on their work at varying rates.


Qualifications

Candidates for this position ideally have experience working with middle school aged students and working in a Waldorf setting. In addition, the woodworking teacher should have excellent skills working with hand tools.


Ideal candidate will also possess:

Demonstrated enthusiasm for Waldorf education;

Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both children and adults;

Facility in working with hand tools and wood;

Classroom management skills and positive discipline strategies;

Confident classroom presence;

Ability to self-start and create lesson plans for a range of abilities;

Skill in leading woodworking projects with students that may include carving and constructing;

Flexibility and ability to work with a variety of communication styles;

Experience in teaching elementary and middle school students;

An eagerness to collaborate deeply with colleagues and school parents;

A commitment to ongoing professional development in both Waldorf pedagogy and the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion;

Bachelor’s degree (preferred);

Waldorf training and experience (preferred); and

3–5 years of experience working with children (preferred).



Responsibilities:

Work cooperatively with colleagues to support the woodworking program;

Engage in professional development;

Collaborate with team members to facilitate interdisciplinary instruction that is inclusive of all learners;

Maintain the woodworking studio;

Maintain a positive learning environment that is safe, joyful, and nurturing; and

Prepare and execute lessons/students projects.


Compensation

This is a part-time position compensated hourly or as a part-time salaried position depending on the availability of the candidate. Days of work could range from 3-5 days per week.


Start Date & Timeline

Start: April 2022 or Summer 2022

Mandatory Staff Training Week: During August 29-September 2, 2022

School Year: September 6, 2022 – June 16, 2023


Required training obtained during employment may include:

CPR and First Aid

Mandated Reporter Training

Stewards of Children - Darkness to Light

Racial Equity: Anti-bias Training



River Valley Waldorf School is located in Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania on the hills overlooking the Delaware River. Our property is situated in a serene, rural setting, yet is only 40 minutes from the Lehigh Valley metropolitan area and just over an hour from both New York City and Philadelphia. Housed in a former public elementary school building, our programs include grades one through eight, kindergarten, nursery, and a caretaker/child program. The full Waldorf curriculum currently includes Spanish, handwork, sculptural arts (woodworking & soapstone carving), fine arts, gardening, music, and movement. The River Valley community is tightly-knit, supportive, and welcoming, and the school has recently deepened its commitment to diversity and equity initiatives. The school is a full member of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN) and is accredited by both the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA) and the Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS).
