The Detroit Waldorf School is seeking a First Grade Class Teacher for the 2022-2023 school year.

We are seeking applicants committed to teaching with enthusiasm and warmth; demonstrating effective classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills. This candidate should also have an interest and desire to work in collaboration with colleagues and with the Anthroposophical principles of Waldorf Education. This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and a Waldorf Teaching Certificate.

The Detroit Waldorf School is a multi-racial and multicultural school, celebrating over 50 years in the heart of the Detroit renaissance. We have the honor of being one of the ten oldest Waldorf schools in the United States. We offer a full curriculum and we are accredited by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America and the Independent Schools Association of the Central States.

The Detroit Waldorf School, founded in 1965, is located just three miles east of downtown in the city’s historic Indian Village neighborhood. Our school resides in a beautiful 1920’s historical building designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn and situated on a beautifully landscaped 4-acre campus with an organic garden. This central location, combined with the school’s curriculum, provides the diverse student body with a respect for people of different religious, ethnic, racial, and socio-economic backgrounds while fostering a sense of world citizenship.

Our school has a strong early childhood program, including parent-child classes, pre-school, and Kindergarten. Our grade 1-8 elementary program includes German and Spanish, eurythmy, handwork, art, educational support program, music including orchestra and band, and physical education. We also offer after-school sports and an extended care and camp program.

The Detroit Waldorf School offers a competitive base salary of $42,000. Additional compensation, commensurate with experience and credentials, is added to the base salary. A full-time salaried faculty member is entitled to benefits: health and dental insurance, retirement, professional development, and tuition remission. The position begins in July 2022.

The hiring process includes, but is not limited to: a campus tour, classroom observations, one or more teaching demonstrations presented by the candidate, and a hiring interview with members of the Personnel Committee and College of Teachers. Travel expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.
