The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School is located in the picturesque town of Newtown in Fairfield County, CT. We are currently searching for a Part Time Second Grade Assistant and Skills Teacher to collaborate, support and hold the Second Grade class after main lesson is taught by lead teacher. The Second Grade Assistant and Skills Teacher will supervise and be responsible the students during specialty class transitions, snack and lunch. Additionally, this position will be responsible for teaching and implementing lessons after main lesson instruction. This will be directed and decided upon by the lead teacher.

The Second Grade Assistant and Skills Teacher will dismiss the students each day and will relay any important information that the lead teacher needs to be aware of either that afternoon or the following day, depending on the urgency. If there is an urgent matter that the class teacher needs to be aware of, this should be communicated that afternoon. The mode of this communication will be decided upon between the lead teacher and the Assistant and Skills Teacher.

Classroom Responsibilities:

1. Support the lead second grade teacher as directed and guided by the second grade teacher to handle transitions, working with specialty teachers and supporting and implementing any curricula deemed necessary to bring after main lesson instruction.

2. Dismiss children at the end of each day.

Duties shared by all part-time teachers:

1. Supervision assignments as needed (recess duties)

2. Particiapte in all-faculty professional days and any required staff training including ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion training.

3. Attendance at Specialty Teacher/ Grade School Meetings, when necessary.

4. Commit to continuing education by attending lectures, workshops, conferences to deepen one’s undrstanding of Waldorf Pedagogy.

5. Participate in peer review and self-evaluations as required by the Staff Development Committee.

Time Involvement:

This is a part time position with onsite days and hours of: Monday – Friday, 11:00am – 3:15pm. Additional out of school hours as required to communicate with second grade teacher as necessary.

Supervision and Evaluation:

Conducted as outlined in the Staff Development Guidelines.

Hiring and Termination:

By the College of Teachers and HVWS Board of Trustees, as outlined in the Teacher Search Guidelines for hiring and the Staff Development Guidelines for termination.

Preference in hiring for this position will be given to candidates who have completed the Waldorf Teacher Training for Grades 1-8, or who are in such training, as well as individuals with a demonstrated interest in advancing diversity and equity in their teaching.
