Potomac Crescent Waldorf School is seeking a grades support teacher for the 2023-2024 school year. The support teacher will work closely with experienced grades teachers. With class teachers’ guidance, they will lead grades classes for part of the day, deliver curriculum outside of the main lesson and manage class transitions, including snack, lunch, and recess. This is a wonderful opportunity for classroom experience for someone engaged in Waldorf teacher training or considering a career as a Waldorf grades teacher.

The full-time grades support teacher will work from 7:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Thursdays, they will work from 7:30 a.m.-noon and participate in faculty meetings until 3:45 p.m. Duties include the following:

-Be receptive to training from experienced Waldorf teachers during planning sessions and in the classroom and implement class teacher instruction;

-With guidance from grades class teachers, lead grades classes during parts of the day and deliver some developmentally-appropriate supplemental lessons based on Waldorf pedagogy and PCWS’s articulated curriculum plan;

-Lead classes during transitions such as specialty class rotations, snack, lunch, and recess times;

-With guidance from the grades class teachers, carry out behavior management pedagogy and methods for engaging students in the social and academic life of the class;

-Help the grades class teachers maintain clean, orderly, and beautiful classrooms;

-Contribute to and participate in class meetings, festivals, and other class events as needed;

-Provide class teachers with student updates for parent-teacher conferences in November and February;

-Contribute to the writing of narrative end-of-year reports for the students.

This is a salaried, exempt position and includes participation in weekly full-faculty meetings, grades department meetings, faculty committee work, enrollment events, assistance during parent-teacher conference days, and attendance at school festivals and events. 

The ideal candidate will have strong social and communication skills, a love for children and teaching, the ability to adapt to the unique needs of various grades classes, and a strong commitment to learning about Waldorf pedagogy and incorporating this into their work. Candidates should be committed to our diversity and inclusivity goal of creating a welcoming space for children and families from all backgrounds. We are seeking candidates who have a bachelor’s degree and who are engaged in Waldorf teacher training or are considering a career in Waldorf education. Previous Waldorf teaching experience is highly valued.
