Assistant Early Childhood Teacher
Singing Cedars School is growing its early childhood program, to include a second mixed-age kindergarten. The Assistant Early Childhood Teacher will work alongside the lead teacher, and help to create a nurturing environment for up to 15 children, ages 3-6; the lead and assistant work closely and collaboratively in support of providing high quality Waldorf-inspired education that meets the needs of each individual child and the class as a whole.
The assistant teacher is responsible for supporting the healthy development of all children in the class, helping to maintain a clean and beautiful classroom space (indoors and out), and taking direction from the lead teacher in support of the class. The morning program runs from 8:30am-12:15pm, Monday-Friday, with extended afternoon care offered until 3:15pm. This position is for the hours of 8:00am - 12:30pm, but could be extended to include afternoon hours, depending on the aftercare class size and the experience of the teacher. Assistant teachers are expected to attend weekly meetings with other early childhood staff. Responsibilities also include festival preparations and participation, attending parent evenings throughout the year, and attending community work days.
A warm heart and interest in early childhood development are essential for this position. The ideal candidate has experience working with young children and is familiar with Waldorf methods.
Singing Cedars School offers Waldorf-inspired education for children in preschool-Grade 4. We currently have one mixed-age, nature-based kindergarten and two mixed-age grades classes, situated on three semi-wooded acres, and in walking distance from a beautiful mixed forest and reservoir. We are adding a second early childhood class in 2022-2023, and looking for an experienced lead teacher and assistant to join our staff.
Our current staff has 35 years combined experience working in Waldorf kindergartens, and new hires will work closely with current teachers in support of all programs. Teachers meet regularly for study, review, and festival planning. Our campus is located at the edge of a unique small town, in rural southeast Iowa, with a local population of 10,000. Surrounded by a trail system for walking and biking, Fairfield boasts a small-town, cosmopolitan feel, thanks in large part to its progressive culture embedded in serene surroundings.

Singing Cedars places a strong emphasis on cultivating a relationship with the natural world, throughout the year. Our current mixed-age kindergarten class begins nearly every day outdoors, dressed to meet the weather. Teachers must likewise be prepared to be outdoors in every season, rain/snow or shine.
Physical requirements for this position include taking frequent walks in all types of weather; use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; speaking, listening, and singing. Applicants must be able to stand and sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, and squat; They require the ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds routinely, and in case of emergency, a 40-pound child.
