The founding board is seeking an experienced and inspiring School Director (SD) with a pioneering spirit to help create the very first public Waldorf high school in Southern Arizona. The (SD) is responsible for upholding the overall operational management and vision of the school. The ideal candidate will have excellent multicultural interpersonal skills, a collaborative leadership style, a deep love and respect for adolescents, and a commitment to celebrating diversity, embracing equity, and cultivating inclusion using the Waldorf educational model. They will ensure that Desert Sage School is adhering to its charter, complying with charter law, and keeping the organization financially healthy. As Desert Sage is a new school, the SD will be flexible in their duties as responsibilities shift and grow.
NOTE: This position begins as a non-exempt part time 20 hours-per-week position and expands to a full time exempt position before the first day of school. This position requires some evening and weekend working hours.
About the School: Situated in the beautiful Sonoran Desert in the city of Tucson, AZ, Desert Sage School will be the first Public Waldorf high school in Southern AZ and the fifth public high school in the nation that is guided by the principles of Waldorf education. Desert Sage School will serve students who are seeking a holistic, academically rigorous and arts-infused education. DSS will open with 125 students in grades 9 and 10, and grow to 425 students in grades 9 through 12, by year four. With a small town community feel, a thriving arts scene and countless hiking and biking trails, Tucson is a wonderful place to raise a family. It is also home to the University of Arizona.
-Works in a collaborative way with the Pedagogical Director (PD) and founding Board to create and nurture a school culture where each individual is known and valued and where there are opportunities for each individual to contribute to the well-being of the school community
-Ensures a supportive and engaging learning environment for all students and a supportive and productive work environment for teachers and staff
-Initiates and coordinates long term, strategic planning for the school including financial policies, administrative policies and a robust development effort
-Ensures that all local, state and national legal requirements are being met
-Hires and manages quality administrative staff to serve the school (together with the faculty)
-Holds, in collaboration with the board, Future Facility Plans, which includes responsibility for the capital campaigns conducted by the school
-Serves as an Advisor to student groups
-Applies the seven Core Principles of Waldorf education in the workplace
-Uses excellent leadership skills to create a climate which embraces diverse perspectives and experiences while keeping the school true to Waldorf principles
-Engages in community outreach and inreach guided by the school’s Mission and Vision
-Commits to and represents the values, vision, and mission of Desert Sage School; is the “face” of the school
-Is passionate about bridging opportunity and achievement gaps
-Is passionate about celebrating diversity, embracing equity, and cultivating inclusion
-Leads in a warm, positive, and creative way
-Arizona State fingerprint clearance card
-Bachelor’s degree or higher
-Three years of relevant job experience
-Budget, finance, data-analysis and risk-management experience
-Work experience in a Waldorf school (or a commitment to enrolling in Waldorf training)
Salary (exempt): $56,300 - $68,800 [based on education and experience]
