Shade Canyon School Administrator
Kelseyville, California

Shade Canyon School is a brand new Waldorf-inspired public charter school in beautiful Kelseyville, California, opening in September 2022 with grades TK-3 and planning to add one grade per year until we offer a full TK-8 program. We expect to have around 80 students in our first year. Nestled at the base of Mt. Konocti along the scenic shores of California’s largest freshwater lake, Kelseyville is full of small-town charm, rich agricultural heritage, wide open natural spaces, and diverse families who are excited to fill our classrooms at the first Waldorf school and second classroom-based charter in all of Lake County.

Shade Canyon’s vision is: “We believe that by honoring simplicity, we nurture the spark of the individual and nourish a thriving community.” Our mission is to “cultivate inspired learners.” You can learn more about our school at www.shadecanyon.org.

We are searching for an experienced visionary to lead our developing school as our first Administrator, beginning July 1. In addition to typical Administrator duties, this position will provide ample creative opportunity to build a Waldorf school culture and community from the ground up. We wish to find a leader who is approachable, a good listener, dynamic yet calm, and passionate about Waldorf education. The right candidate for this job will be flexible and resourceful: just as ready to sub last-minute for a teacher or a janitor as to call a major donor or deliver an inspiring speech at a school assembly.

The Administrator is responsible for providing strategic leadership and operational oversight. S/he will oversee the instructional program (in collaboration with a core group of teachers), manage the needs of the business, including fiscal and legal management, and form strong relationships with all stakeholders within our school, the district, and the larger Lake County community.

As part of his/her role, the Administrator is expected to:
-Form and deliver a successful public Waldorf educational program
-Provide visionary leadership and guide the direction of the school
-Create a data-centered and supportive collegial school culture
-Facilitate and build community among people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives
-Manage facilities, including site development over the first few years
-Manage personnel and school operations
-Foster exceptional school-wide communication
-Develop robust collaboration with key stakeholders
-Work with external organizations and negotiate on the school’s behalf
-Ensure compliance with state and federal charter school laws
-Oversee the successful completion of state and district requirements
-Maintain timely communications with our back-office business services provider regarding financial oversight and planning
-Take an active role in fundraising and grant writing
-Oversee daily operations and implementation of student services, including discipline and crisis intervention
-Serve as a strong advocate for the school’s best interests

At Shade Canyon, the Administrator reports directly to the Board of Directors, and serves as a key part of the school’s overall governance structure, which also includes the Faculty, the Faculty Core Group, and Parent Community Council.

Shade Canyon School is an equal opportunity employer, and is structured as an independent charter school. It is our hope that our new Administrator will be available to consult starting in spring 2022 on various points of school development, then officially take the position starting on July 1, 2022.
