Muya Enrichment

Irvine, CA, USA

Full time

Dec 13

The name of this enrichment program, “Muya,” means “to plant” in Atayal, a language spoken by indigenous people in northern Taiwan. So Muya is designed to plant a village of like-minded families to share our talents, enthusiasm, and resources. We have created a community center in which we nourish our children with organic plant-based meals and organize service-based projects inspired by Waldorf pedagogy and outdoor schooling. Our community is a branch of the eco-village project, Mother Tree Sanctuary. Ultimately, it is my dream for the Muya community to seed a physical eco-village in Orange County. So the enrichment program is more than a Waldorf education center; it is a community center dedicated to weaving together a network of families to raise their children together.

Muya is currently led by another teacher and myself who carry two learning groups of children respectively—K-2 Young Saplings and grades 3-6 Tall Trees. We have rented a house with one of our families and have about 25 children enrolled. Most families pay for a 2-day program (either Mon-Tues or Wed-Thurs) with funding from a local charter school. Friday park days are free to everyone. We meet 10am-4pm, starting with outdoor play and then a family-style organic, plant-based meal shared together. The Young Saplings class, following the community meal, has Main Lesson, snack, rest and reading time, snack, then specialty class (handwork, games, eurythmy).

We are looking for a teacher to take over leadership of the Young Saplings class—including lesson-planning—with assistance from the current teacher with the kindergartners during Main Lesson. You would be at the community center 9:30am-4:30pm Mon-Thurs. We have a week-long break almost every month, monthly parent meetings, and end our term the 2nd week of June.

It is our hope that we can find someone who is invested in the overall community project and who has children who would benefit from being a part of the community 4 days a week with free tuition. We have eurythmy classes, capoeira, and violin classes that we are offering in addition to the main lessons, games, handwork, nature immersion, and meditation classes. With our current enrollment, we can pay $25/hour. That is more than the current teachers make :) We are a non-hierarchical organization, so the third teacher would be joining the decision-making team for the community center and helping guide the program. We are currently seeking non-profit status.
