Teacher, upper grades
As part of the Farm School leadership team, this position is responsible for coordinating and implementing outdoor based education for ages 5 -10 years at Farm School, resulting in a collaborative outdoor learning environment that supports development of curious, creative, and compassionate children.
Maximum 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday with the following schedule Monday-Thursday 8am-4pm, with a 30 min lunch and two 15 min breaks. Friday approximately 5 planning/prep hours
Candidates should have the ability and flexibility to teach all grades, including the upper 3rd/4th group
Candidates must have successful teaching experience, be committed to excellence in teaching, and positive and effective classroom management.
Sourcing and developing age-appropriate project-based activities that align with Farm School core objectives and meet the appropriate CC.SS as outlined by chosen curriculum
Identify students’ individual learning styles and needs and align lessons/activities in a way that connects with them and challenges them, fostering enthusiasm in learning
Model curiosity, enthusiasm, interest, and love to each student through daily interactions, actions, and communication
Communicate with leadership team and participate in team meetings, strategic planning activities and in-service days
Integrate farm and garden-based activities as much as possible to connect children to their surroundings
Represent Farm School approach and impact to the community, partners, and Board in an enthusiastic and detailed way
Agree and align with the Farm School approach to teaching children
Communicate kindly and openly with students, team members, and families
Track and document progress of individual students in collaboration with co-teachers
3+ years teaching experience
Experience in alternative education (outdoor, project-based, Montessori, Waldorf, Reggio etc) preferred
All Class Teachers are expected to be good collaborators, to have a history of strong, positive communication skills with parents and colleagues, to demonstrate professionalism and healthy boundaries, and to convey warmth and joy.
Must be self-motivated, hardworking, patient and dependable
Must have excellent children communication skills
Must follow Organization’s approach to teaching children (see teacher guide)
Must be able to comfortably lead children in outdoor-based activities through all four seasons
Must be able to handle exposure to dust, odor, noise, and live animals
Must be able to push, pull, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs
Must limit on-site cell phone usage during student-interaction time
Must seek approval from property owners prior to the creation of any permanent project (structure, painting, etc.)
Must keep classroom and grounds clear from unnecessary clutter during non-school time
Must adhere to safety and uphold Farm School rules and regulations
Must hold valid driver’s license
To work with integrity and respect for coworkers, students, families, livestock, and the environment
To use good communication with coworkers/managers to address problems and keep an efficient and successful work environment.
