Assistant Teachers in Early Childhood Farm and Forest Adirondack Program

Lakeside School at Black Kettle Farm

Essex, NY, USA

Full time

Kindergarten and Early Childhood

Jun 9

Lakeside School at Black Kettle Farm is seeking Assistant Teachers for our early childhood outdoor based programs. Lakeside School offers two early childhood programs, Sprouts Day Care for 1 to 3 year olds and Farm and Forest Kindergarten for children ages almost 4 to 6. Both programs nurture children’s bodies and minds through exploration of our 70 acre farm and surrounding forest.

In our Pre-K/Kindergarten class, every day is an Outside Day. The children hike to a different outdoor ecosystem each day of the week and experience first-hand the wonders of the natural world and its many cycles. In their forest classroom, the children's imaginations are inspired by huge trees, fallen logs, mossy boulders, and winding creeks. While exploring their imaginations, the children also build outdoor skills and become comfortable with the seasonal North Country climate.

The Sprouts child care program provides a predictable and steady rhythm in a home-like environment. Children have ample opportunities to experience safely structured independence and movement, primarily through outdoor play, animal care and farm exploration. The dynamic and sometimes rugged terrain allow little ones to develop a strong and healthy will, problem solving skills, spatial awareness and a blooming sense of life. In addition, the multi-age experience afforded by our connections with teachers and children in other classes at Lakeside add dimensions of community and caring for our little ones.

The Assistants in both programs will work with our Lead Teachers and other Assistants to provide a program using Waldorf early childhood methods. The Assistants will support the Lead teachers in implementing curriculum, preparation of snacks, care and safety of the children including preparing the outdoor environment, clean up, and other organizational tasks.

We are looking for individuals who are experienced in caring for young children, comfortable with leading children in outdoor adventures, have a background or an interest in learning more about Waldorf education, and who are responsible and caring individuals.

While the faculty has strong foundations in Anthroposophy, Waldorf Education, and outdoor education, we continually look at ways to build our programs to meet the needs of the children of the North Country. We work to create a culture of collaboration and initiative.

The Assistant Teachers are paid an hourly rate of $14.42, work a schedule of 27 to 36 hours a week, and are eligible for 50 percent Tuition Remission.
