Early Childhood Assistant and Aftercare Teacher
Sunfield Farm and Waldorf School is now hiring for an early childhood assistant position for the 23-24 school year!
Sunfield has been on the farm and land for 17 years. We serve 155 children in preschool through 8th grade, and expect a return to strong enrollment for the 2023/24 school year. Daily, children and teachers work with animals, plants, gardens, compost, walk and play on the land, and steward this magical place. Our dedicated faculty of 18 includes lead teachers, assistants and specialties instructors. Our faculty enjoy a strong colleagueship, deepening their work through Anthroposophy and a connection to the land and animals. Faculty have also committed to an examination of issues surrounding diversity, equity and inclusion, with the goal of educating each young person in the elemental values of justice, equity, and inclusivity; and to encourage practices of compassion and critical-thought into their lives within, outside of, and beyond Sunfield. Sunfield maintains a committed and supportive administrative team that participates in the life of the school and farm.
Job Description:
Under the direction of the lead teacher, the assistant teacher supports the nurturing and engaging early childhood environment for students and families. Primary responsibilities include providing supervision of children; leading small group activities, providing interventions to meet the unique needs of individual children and responding to social-emotional needs of individual children. This position is 5 hours per day, 4 days per week, with the option to expand into a lead position in Aftercare, 4 days a week, 2.5 hours a day.
Required Qualifications and Expectations:
- Experience working in an early childhood program with children, ages 3-5
- Have an interest and understanding of Waldorf education philosophy
- Demonstrate warmth, compassion and clarity in working with both children and adults
- Work cohesively with the lead teacher to create an environment of warmth, love, and safety for the children
- Be able to take instruction from the lead teacher to assist in running all aspects of the classroom
- Observe and care for children’s physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual development and well-being
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Waldorf Education and Pedagogy and a willingness to develop one’s understanding and practice
Compensation
$18 / hr
Paid sick leave
Tuition remission for any enrolled children commensurate with FTE (.5 FTE = 50% off tuition base)

Sunfield Land for Learning encompasses a Waldorf school, Biodynamic farm and community education program. We are located on an 81-acre campus in Jefferson county on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. We are one of few Waldorf schools in the nation that is located on a working farm.
