We are looking for a Movement Education Teacher for a part-time position, with approximately 6 hours of actual teaching time per week. While Spacial Dynamics training is greatly appreciated, it is not required.
Our School Community
Mālamalama Waldorf School offers preschool through Grade 8. Located in the residential subdivision of Hawaiian Paradise Park, nestled on a portion of our 20-acre parcel in a beautiful rainforest setting. Mālamalama Waldorf School was founded in 1978 by a group of devoted parents and educators. In 1979 MWS was incorporated as an independent, non-profit educational and cultural organization in the State of Hawai`i. The school is a well-respected member of the Big Island community with 40+ dedicated years offering Waldorf Education, accredited by AWSNA, HAIS, WASC, and a member of WECAN.
The Big Island of Hawai`i is rich in cultural diversity as well as boasting a most unusual landscape including an active volcano, ranch lands, beaches, and winter snow atop the majestic Mauna Kea. You can surf in the morning and don your winter apparel for a respectful visit to the summit in the afternoon.
Qualifications
Candidates are expected to bring a love for movement and knowledge of child development, a healthy movement for the whole child, age-appropriate games, and rhythmic activities like jump rope to help the child with attention focus, and presence (in the physical body and mind), equipment games and circus arts to foster skills with hoops, sticks, balls, etc. in coordination and social awareness, world games to develop cultural awareness and curiosity, and Makahiki-like games during a particular season.
In accordance with the Main Lesson curriculum, the Movement Educator is expected to support the class teachers by living into Norse Mythology in 4th grade, the Pentathlon Arts by living into the Greek ideas of Goodness, Truth, and Beauty in the 5th Grade, and exploring Medieval activities like Archery, Jousting, Stilt Walking, and Gymnastics/Acrobatics in the 6th Grade. Supporting human evolution from pre-historic times into Knighthood and Chivalry, developing proper manners and morals (code of conduct), while becoming teenagers. During this time, pre-sports and sports are exercised like ultimate Frisbee, Basketball, Volleyball, and Spaceball.
The dance curriculum follows the development of the child through the elementary grades from simple circle dances to more intricate Greek, Israeli, and other international Folk dances that meet and develop the child's understanding and appreciation of the folk soul of other cultures. Singing, clapping, and rhythmic tapping are also important parts of Movement Education.
Overall, Movement Education is Moral Education. Cooperative games and all other Movement Education activities develop self-awareness playfully in living interaction with others and the group and the community at large.
