1st - 3rd, 6th - 8th Grade Waldorf Music Teacher
River Oak Charter School’s music program is for students in grades 1 through 8 and currently consists of recorder, strings, and chorus. We have many other instruments and are looking to expand this program. We currently have a strings teacher (but would love another), a choir instructor, and a rock band teacher. The music teacher brings a deep understanding of the ways music and rhythm support the developing child. This position requires authentic warmth, good humor, joy, and enthusiasm for teaching. The music teacher develops their own curriculum based on the needs of the students in each grade, prepares material for each class to present during seasonal assemblies, and provides support for class plays when needed.
If candidate can teacher other subjects in the morning, this position can be full time.
Specific duties for the Music Teacher position include:
Develop grade appropriate curriculum for the Music Program for grades 1-3, 6-8, drawing on Waldorf music sources, folk music of various cultures and traditions (in accordance with Grades curriculum where possible), the classical repertoire from ancient to modern
Lead middle school band rehearsals once weekly. Music selections for the middle school band may branch out beyond traditional sources, according to the interests and ability of the group.
Prepare a few pieces for each class to perform in seasonal assemblies and for promotion of the school.
A dedication to learning about Waldorf Education
Preference for Waldorf Trained teachers (not required)
Experience with music instruction for grades 1-8
At least one year of classroom teaching experience
A love of children and a deep desire to support their growth
Excellent classroom management skills
Willingness to be part of a culture that values professional growth and ongoing positive and constructive feedback
