Potomac Crescent Waldorf School is seeking a five-day mixed-age-kindergarten assistant teacher for the 2023-2024 school year to join our dedicated faculty and vibrant community at our newly renovated school in historic Old Town Alexandria. The parks in our neighborhood have beautiful views of the Potomac River. This is a salaried position

The mixed-age-kindergarten assistant teacher works with a lead teacher in a class of four- to six-year-old children. The class meets Monday through Friday during the school year from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The assistant teacher should arrive early enough for snack preparation, but at least by 8:00 a.m., and typically needs a half hour after class to help with clean-up and transitioning children to the afternoon program. 

The assistant teacher helps the lead teacher carry out classroom programs and activities. The specific role in the classroom will be worked out cooperatively with the lead teacher, but will generally include the following:

  • Supporting the lead teacher in caring for the children and maintaining classroom order 
  • Preparing or assisting student preparation of a daily snack
  • Helping with preparation and oversight of crafts
  • In cooperation with the lead teacher, cleaning the classroom and other spaces used by the class
  • Meeting with the lead teacher at least weekly for planning and review

As an active member of the school faculty, the assistant teacher will participate in weekly faculty meetings and committee work. The assistant teacher will also attend class meetings, school events, admissions events, and festival celebrations. 

The ideal candidate will have a warm and gentle classroom presence, the ability to work cooperatively with other teachers, and will enjoy being active outdoors with the children in all safe weather conditions. We are seeking candidates who have familiarity with Waldorf early childhood education and a willingness to deepen their understanding and practice. Waldorf teacher training and/or Waldorf early childhood teaching experience are highly valued.
