Grades Classroom Assistant for the 2023-2024 school year.

Detroit Waldorf School welcomes applications for a full-time grade classroom assistant teacher at the start of the 2023-2024 school year. The ideal candidate holds a bachelor’s degree, will be reliable, flexible, a quick learner, has good communication skills, lots of energy, and love working with energetic young children! We are looking for candidates who are dedicated to Waldorf education, interested in Anthroposophy, and possess a love of teaching. The Assistant should be comfortable taking direction and guidance from the Class Teacher and Subject Teachers regarding the day-to-day responsibilities in a Waldorf classroom and substitute teaching as necessary. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in morning classroom activities and movement circles
  • Singing 
  • Support for the teacher by anticipating needs within the classroom 
  • Attend to individuals or small groups of students who need extra support 
  • Help to hold the rhythm and expectations for a large class throughout the day 
  • Assist with transitions between classes and recess supervision
  • Help to maintain the order, harmony, care, and cleanliness of the classroom
  • Prepare equipment and supplies for a variety of lessons and activities.

This position includes an opportunity to gain experience and mentorship from experienced Waldorf teachers. The position provides an opportunity to apply for concurrent participation in a developing pilot internship program on-site for an assistant interested or enrolled in an approved Waldorf teacher training program with some scholarship support toward Waldorf certification. 

This is an hourly position that starts at $15.30 per hour. It includes two weeks of paid vacation over December break, paid sick time, snow days, and a 30-minute break during the day. One weekly 30-minute meeting with the lead class teacher will be scheduled during the school day. Work hours are 8:15 - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday and one afternoon 3:30-4:30 on call for extended care support. Attendance is also required at in-service and training meetings in August, and other times throughout the year, upon request. 

The application process includes but is not limited to an introductory campus tour, classroom observations, a hiring interview with members of the Personnel Committee, and a background check.
